Gifts by Al and Linda Drysdale
1 Corinthians 1:7 "So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Paul expresses his desire that we come behind in no spiritual gift, as we wait for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. In other words, until Jesus does return, the gifts of the Spirit, will be in full operation, and we should not be lacking, or come behind, in having these gifts in our own lives. And healing is a gift.
Also in 1 Corinthians 12:1 Paul says, "Now concerning, spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant."
We all have heard messages about the different gifts of the Spirit, listing them all with explanations of to what they are:
1 Corinthians 12:8-10 "For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirit; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues."
These gifts are divided into 3 different categories:
a) Inspirational - tongues, interpretation of tongues, prophecy
b) manifestation - faith, miracles, healing
c) revelation - word of knowledge, wisdom, discernment of spirits
Gifts [not even spiritual gifts] are no substitution for obedience and for following God's Word.
Matt 7:21-23 "Not every one that saith until me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."
1 Corinthians 12:4-7 "Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operation, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal."
This is saying to me the bottom line to gifts, is that it is the manifestation of the Spirit of God within the believer, or body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:31 "But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way."
So here, Paul is saying to covet earnestly the best gifts, and yet what is the more excellent way, he desires to show us
1 Corinthians 13:1 "Though I speak with the tongues of men or of angels and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal."
I said earlier that the bottom line to the gifts, is the manifestation of the Spirit of God. God is love, and so therefore as God is manifested through us to others ~ as gifts are for others and not for ourselves. We will see the Love of God shining forth.
